“Made on a small farm in Somerset, England, using home-grown ingredients where possible, Lyonsleaf is passionate about producing skincare that is 100% natural and 100% water-free, using 100% active ingredients to produce incredibly effective products that are safe, gentle and affordable.”
Lyonsleaf is a UK based natural brand that I have only recently been introduced to. The products are so simple yet so effective. The brand keeps things simple by incorporating 4 main points into the brand: 100% natural ingredients, 100% water free products, 100% active ingredients, and made in Britain with home-grown ingredients. It’s surprising the products have such an affordable price tag with the quality of them. Having active ingredients makes the products much more effective, and being water free means the products won’t go rancid as oil lasts much longer than water. Read more here.
About the Brand
Lyonsleaf started out as a food and herb business, selling the produce that Ben and Vicky Lyons grew on their farm to local restaurants and at farmers markets. However, they had long been making natural skincare products as a hobby (using home-grown ingredients from the farm) and so in 2010 they started to sell some of our beauty products on their market stalls, too. The products are very effective on skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.
“With a lot of hard work, Lyonsleaf has developed into becoming the small but perfectly formed range of 100% natural skincare products you see today. We are hugely proud to have since won two awards in the 2014 FreeFrom Skincare Awards and are delighted to now be parents to our beautiful daughter Evie.”

Lyonsleaf has created products using oils, and are created for using the oil cleansing method. This is true for the Beauty Balm, one of the popular products by the brand. This products is also multi-use. The step-by-step method for oil cleansing is included on the Lyonsleaf website, an goes as follows:
“1. Apply Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm to face when dry, massaging thoroughly to dissolve dirt and make-up. You can take the time to pamper yourself, or do it very quickly if you’re in a hurry.
“2. Run a clean flannel under comfortably hot water and hold it over your face allowing the steam to gently lift the dirt, make-up and dead skin cells.
“3.Wipe away residue leaving clean, hydrated skin. Use a muslin flannel for extra exfoliation.
“4. Repeat as necessary.
“You don’t need a toner and you may not need to moisturise. If you do, use a small amount of Beauty Balm as a moisturiser. We recommend oil cleansing your face morning and night. Do not use flannels or muslins more than twice before washing, dry them out between uses.”
This is like your at home personal spa. Below are reviews of two products that are photographed above. The Beauty Balm, and the Zinc and Calendula Cream. Keep reading for the full reviews.
“Cleanse, remove make-up, exfoliate (using the Oil Cleansing Method), moisturise, nourish, repair and protect. All from one revolutionary little pot. All with no artificial chemicals whatsoever, and without stripping the skins natural oils. Suitable for sensitive skin. 95% organic tropical oils (Babassu, Shea Butter, Macademia and Jojoba) all crammed with free radical busting antioxidants.”
I’ve tried oil cleansing before, but not like this. The times I tried it before my skin went bright red from steaming my face too much, and my skin felt stripped. This is like your own complete at home spa treatment facial. It’s so simple my effective. It’s like the oil and hot cloth push all black head completely out my nose. That’s a mild exaggeration, but my nose, which is my black head problem area, hasn’t felt this smooth in ages. It moisturises too even after being washed off, and doesn’t feel greasy on the skin. It just feels luxurious and moisturising. Such an amazing product.
This is a fantastic multi-use product. It can be used as an oil cleanser, as a moisturiser, or as a balm on extra dry patches. It has an amazing natural scent of Rose that’s also slightly woody. The texture is as expected; a thick oil balm that melts in the hands, but is still thick enough to full moisturise even the driest of skin patches. When rubbed into the skin, this balm dissolves into the skin.
I like to take my time rubbing it in like my own at home facial. When I rub this onto the skin I notice it removes the scab heads on my acne areas on the skin. Once rubbed in, I run my cloth under hot water and lay it over my face for a few seconds before gently exfoliating my skin with it. This process lightly steams the skin, exfoliates away dead skin gently, and moisturises at the same time. It’s great for acne prone skin. After using my skin feels clean, but moisturised.
The packaging of this product is also luxurious in its brown glass jar with a back glass lid. Be careful not the drop this as the lid is likely to break, but I know the product will last a long time in this glass container.

Zinc & Calendula Cream
“Lyonsleaf Zinc and Calendula Cream contains the same amount of calming Calendula as our original Calendula Cream. It also contains Zinc Oxide (found in calamine lotion), it is unfragranced and is a nut oil free formulation (although it may contain nut oil traces)
“Zinc oxide has it’s own soothing properties, but is also rumoured to reduce excess sebum production (be aware some people find it drying). It also forms a breathable, protective and moisture repellent barrier (be warned! – it’s so good it wont easily wash off of clothes or cloth nappies).”
I love this product. It has the most bizarre texture that feels like Shea butter. It melts into the skin like actual butter, but smooths over the skin so seamlessly. You’d think this stuff, with such a thick texture, would break out acne prone skin, but it doesn’t at all. Quite the opposite. My skin feels protected against everything with this stuff on, and it moisturises the acne blemish scabs to leave the skin smooth and very moisture filled. I love it.
This product is very different from anything I have ever used before. The texture is very thick, and a yellow tinted colour. It sets into a hard oil based formula and I have to scoop it out with the back of my nail. It takes a bit longer to melt into the skin that the Beauty Balm, and has to be rubbed in quite well as it’s so thick. When rubbed, it covers the skin with a white tinted colour. It feels like a thick dry oil on the face, so I prefer to use it on a night as make-up doesn’t really sit well over it without being extra glowy.
I especially like this apply this to my acne prone areas as I feel like pollution, dirt, or anything else cannot penetrate the barrier and effect my skin any further. I also feel like the cyst areas that scab over are moisturised so don’t form as many scabs. I wouldn’t say this stuff improves my acne massively, but I do feel like it prevents it from getting any worse. Having oil on my skin also stops me from touching my ace as much.
The scent is very light of Calendula which is slightly floral, but barely there, and again the packaging is as the Beauty Balm above. In a glass jar, smaller I might add. It lasts a long time though as a little goes a long way. I love this stuff and highly recommend.
