Natural Haircare Review: Giovanni 2 Chic Shampoo & Conditioner

Changing my hair care products to being all natural wasn’t a necessity for me originally as I wanted to first focus on my skincare. But when researching into certain ingredients I heard a few times that we really need to be careful what we put onto our hair. Especially with shampoo and hair dye and anything that we are putting directly onto our scalp. This is because whatever we put onto our scalp (or skin in general) gets absorbed into our bodies, and with shampoo it’s getting absorbed directly into your head. So do you really want all of those toxic chemicals absorbing into your head and potentially your brain? I know that I don’t!

Originally, I really wanted to try out this “No Poo” method which involves not using shampoo, conditioner, or any product on your hair at all. At first people use ingredients such as apple cider vinegar, castille soap, and baking soda to compensate but these things can [apparently] really damage the quality of your hair in the long run. These ingredients are only being used for a period of time when the hair is transitioning. Our hair gets so used to being stripped of the natural oils so throughout our lives its starts to over produce oils to compensate. So what happens when we stop washing our hair?! The oils are still over producing for a period of 3 to 6 + months which is the transition period.

At the time I was researching into this, which was only a few months ago, I was in the midst of my first real acne break out in about 5 years when I took the Roaccutane treatment. I decided to focus on my skin first and instead opted for an all natural shampoo and conditioner combination. The first one that I tried is Giovanni 2 Chic Argon Oil duo. The brand is vegan, cruelty free, SLS free, paraben free and so on.

I found this brand in my local health food store where the products more expensive than what I am used to paying with each bottle costing roughly £9.00 each for 250ml bottles. Since purchasing these items I have found that TK Max actually stock the 710ml bottles within stores and these cost £10.00 individually so there is a money saving tip if you are planning on purchasing.

REVIEW

So as for the products themselves, I really love them! I was pleasantly surprised because I almost expected to not have amazing results. But due to the products not containing any harmful chemicals my hair didn’t feel stripped at all which is something I felt previously using cheaper brands.

What drew me to these products was the packaging! The packaging is so sleek that they just look expensive and I was originally surprised when I found out that these items were natural, cruelty free, and vegan. Whilst I am mentioning about the packaging I will also say how the product is easy to squeeze out of the bottle and the lid is very secure and doesn’t leak at all. However, be careful when putting the product into your hand whilst washing as a lot can be dispersed through the hole.

Both of the items have a very faint scent that is pleasant and not over powering or artificial and the scent is also not strong on the hair after washing. If you’re used to having flowery smelling hair after washing then drop those expectation with this product. The smell is virtually non existent but instead just smells clean. I guess this is to be expected with natural products that aren’t full of artificial fragrances so this is a positive thing in my mind.

As the shampoo doesn’t contain and sulphates the product doesn’t lather up a lot when being massaged into the hair but it lathers up just enough to move around the hair and clean all the areas necessary. However, you might find that you need to use a tad bit more than what you are used to.

The conditioner is very moisturising which I am very happy about as my hair was feeling very dry and stripped from the cheaper brands I was using previously. But again, you may find that you need slightly more product than you used to use. I run the conditioner through the mid lengths and ends of my hair, then I comb through with a wide tooth comb, and leave on for around 2 minutes before rinsing.

My hair doesn’t have any knots after I wash it and it dries to be soft an definitely not stripped at all. I did find that the bottle of conditioner didn’t last very long and only lasted me around 6 washes so keep that in mind before purchasing. Also, at first I found that my hair did get greasy again quite quickly (2-3 days) after washing as I usually wash my hair every 5-7 days. Now that I have been using these products from a few months I can say that my hair is back to not needing a wash for 5-7 days.

SO TO RECAP

  • No harmful chemicals so hair doesn’t feel stripped.
  • Cruelty free & vegan.
  • Products may be expensive but are more affordable within TK Max.
  • Leaves hair soft & shiny.
  • Faint scent due to not having artificial fragrances.
  • Nice & sleek packaging so looks expensive.
  • Conditioner bottle in particular doesn’t last very long.
  • Hair may feel greasier quicker when first start using.
  • Shampoo doesn’t lather as much as sulphate laden products do.
  • I have and will repurchase from this brand as I really think they are a great brand!
